TS Diagram for the Regenerative Cycle

This red arrow indicates that QC flows from the cold reservoir into heat exchanger #1.

Process flow diagram for a gas refrigeration cycle with regeneration.
The key to using

regeneration

to reach very low temperatures is that, after rejecting QH to the hot reservoir, the high pressure air is cooled even further in the

regenerator

before expanding in the turbine to the minimum temperature of the cycle.
In an infinitely large (or ideal)

regenerator

, T4 drops all the way down to T6.
