Just like a refrigeration cycle, the coefficient of performance is used to quantify the performance of a heat pump cycle.
We use the symbol “COP” but with a subscript “HP” to once again remind us that we are analyzing a heat pump cycle.
What differentiates the COP for a heat pump from the COP for a refrigerator is the fact that the desired output for a heat pump is QH.
This makes a difference in the equation for the heat pump COP.
The COP for a heat pump is typically between 1.2 and 2.5.
